Hurricane Ridge - Sutra on Fears & Doubts

We all have fears and doubts at some point in our lives and that’s okay. Doubts are a natural part of development and provide plenty of food for thought, especially at critical junctions in our lives. It is important, however, not to be consumed by them, not to let your logical mind take over the guidance of your spirit, for that always belongs to a higher power.

Listen to your doubts, try to deeply feel and understand their concerns, they are simply trying to protect your earthly self from making potentially painful mistakes. Like a loving mother protecting her baby, she desires no harm to happen to it. Even though that’s a noble cause, try to always keep in mind that the true path of the spirit must be endowed with risks, especially during the time when one breaks free from the tight grip of motherly self love and preservation.

Proving yourself to yourself is no minor task, and aspiring heroes since beginning-less times often struggle with such shadow chasing. Taking long dangerous trips into faraway lands and engaging mythical monsters only to believe in yourself and the strength and courage of your own spirit. Most don’t come back alive from such quests and must try lifetime after lifetime to achieve victory, to taste the satisfaction of conquering their self doubts in that one priceless moment.

The truth is, none of it needs to be so dramatic after all, and the intensity of the drama clearly depends on the thick layers of self-doubt that one must break through in one lifetime. Interestingly, even though every human era is different, basic self-doubts remain the same and must be conquered in similar ways regardless of the ever-changing external conditions.

Once the sweet nectar of spiritual freedom has been tasted, it is important to pace yourself as one gains deeper wisdom and understanding into the limitless world within ourselves. With time, doubts become our wisdom advisers, alerting us of lurking dangers and potential mis-steps, keeping the balance well, especially while walking a treacherous terrain of inner trickery.

Gradually one learns about decision making, fully understanding that the next step could always be your last. Unnecessary risks, so common in the early years, are frowned upon when wisdom dawns. One learns to entertain the many voices of the one within, allowing them to play their part in guidance and advice.

Fear not my friends,

Embrace the risks,

Bravely seek wisdom

And contentment.

When faced with doubts,

Kiss their lips,

And taste their wisdom

Not resentment.
